Educational Info: Ginger: The Potent Culinary Spice With Mighty  Healing Powers

With brilliant red, pink, and orange flowers, Ginger blossoms stand out in the warm tropical and subtropical lands where they flourish. Ginger belongs to a plant family that includes cardamom and turmeric and boasts a lovely spicy aroma. All three of those lovely plants are warming and traditionally have been used as anti-inflammatories. A tropical plant with gorgeous flowers, this potent healer-plant offers many benefits as evidenced by thousands of years of traditional use in healing. The rhizome, or root, is the most often used part of ginger, zingiber officinale, for healing and as a culinary spice.

Traditional healing uses of ginger
A moving gut is a happy gut! The medicinal components of ginger root, help with gastrointestinal motility – the rate at which food moves from the stomach and through the intestines. Ginger is beloved as an anti-inflammatory plant, that also offers pain-relieving properties. A favorite for reducing nausea, it’s been used for morning sickness, motion sickness, and nausea associated with illness and chemotherapy. Researchers think Ginger root has properties that can lower blood pressure and reduce blood clotting. Ginger may also benefit heart and brain health due to its warming properties and possible increase in blood flow (which carries more oxygen to the brain!).

“Researchers think the active components of the ginger root are volatile oils and pungent phenol compounds, such as gingerols and shogaols. Today, healthcare professionals may recommend ginger to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting from motion sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat mild stomach upset, to reduce the pain of osteoarthritis, and may even be used in heart disease.” Read more at: www.mountsinai.org/health-library/herb/ginger

Suggested Use: Use one teaspoon of the cut and sifted dried botanical as a tea. Cover and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, according to your desire and taste. Roots may be steeped longer than flowers. Strain and enjoy hot or cold daily, with or without your preferred sweetener. Its small cut and sifted form makes it easy to use in teas and tinctures.
