Stinging Nettle Leaf, An All Around Fabulous Healer!
Educational Info:
This is truly one of my favorite herbs to turn to when my sinuses are acting up! Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) is found in every state except Hawaii and grows abundantly in areas with good rainfall. It's particularly common in the Pacific Northwest
Nettle leaf, derived from the stinging nettle plant (Urtica dioica), has been traditionally used in various cultures for its medicinal properties. Historically, it has been utilized to support wellness when dealing with allergies, arthritis, gout, and anemia. The leaves are known for their anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects.
All parts of the Stinging Nettle plant have benefits. Traditionally, Nettle has been used for supporting the body in numerous ways:
A nutrient-rich food: The leaves have been harvested and eaten as a nutritious green vegetable, rich in vitamins and minerals. Cooking the leaves can neutralize the stinging hairs. They are traditionally eaten as part of a salad, in soups and stews, and, of course, as an herbal tea. Rich in nutrients, Nettle is packed with vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
Best known for its allergy relief in soothing hay fever and other allergies and calming the sinuses, nettle can be made into a hot or cold tea to drink throughout allergy season.
Anti-inflammatory properties: Nettle leaf has been added to pain-relieving herbs to help with inflammation.
Blood sugar control: Nettle has been used historically to support blood sugar balance, and some studies suggest it may help regulate blood sugar levels.
Support for urinary health: Nettle leaf tea can act as a diuretic, aiding in treating urinary tract infections and improving kidney function.
Other historical uses of Stinging Nettle in North America include fiber production: The fibrous stems of the stinging nettle were used to make strong, durable cordage. The fibers were processed to create threads for weaving nets, fishing lines, and clothing. Nettle was also used as a natural dye plant. The roots produce a yellow dye.
Suggested Use: Use one teaspoon of the cut and sifted dried botanical as a tea. Cover and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, according to your desire and taste. Leaves and flowers do better when not steeped as long as roots, bark, or other hard parts of plants. Strain and enjoy hot or cold daily, with or without your preferred sweetener. Its small cut and sifted form makes it easy to use in teas and tinctures.
Caution: Consult a physician before use if you may be pregnant or nursing. Always discuss with your healthcare provider before starting any botanical products. Keep out of reach of children.
ALLERGEN CAUTION: Some ingredients may be processed using the same machinery as known allergens. Use caution if you are sensitive to certain foods or ingredients.
